With another season on the horizon, Oak Forest boys’ tennis coach John Amoni is eager to guide a young but talented team toward success. Amoni, who has been involved in tennis for years, brings both passion and experience to the program.
Amoni’s coaching journey began at Carl Sandburg before he joined Oak Forest at the request of a friend. "It felt like a great opportunity to give back and help the next generation of players," he said.
Despite fielding a younger team, Amoni is optimistic about the season, especially with returning state qualifiers Lincoln Hamaran and Om Patel. "We’ve got a great group of kids," he said. "Hamaran and Patel finished second in the conference last year, and they’ll be key in leading the team."
For Amoni, the players are his biggest motivation. "The spring season can be tough with the weather, but the kids keep me going," he said. "Seeing them improve and push themselves is what makes coaching so rewarding."
With a younger roster, Amoni aims to help his athletes develop a deeper understanding of strategy and technique. According to him, they want players to execute shots more effectively and grow their confidence on the court.
Beyond skill development, Amoni emphasizes teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. He says that tennis is as much a mental game as a physical one, adding that hard work and persistence lead to success on and off the court.
To build team chemistry, the players participate in a speed drill called "Heart Attack." Amoni explains that while it’s tough, it brings the team together. He says they want everyone to feel part of something bigger.
With a mix of youth and leadership, Oak Forest is ready for an exciting season under Amoni’s guidance.
