With the spring season approaching, the Oak Forest High School baseball team convened for Media Day, focusing on senior leadership, personal growth, and a renewed emphasis as they prepare for the 2025 campaign.
Senior pitcher Justin Fields reflected on how experience and mindset have influenced his development. "When you’re on the field, you gotta enjoy the game," Fields said. "Come in with a clear mind. Don’t be so hard on yourself." Fields, who began his varsity journey as a sophomore, said early struggles with nerves ultimately made him stronger. "My sophomore year, I was up and down between varsity and JV," he said. "I was pitching on varsity — there were a few games I did really well and a few where my nerves got to me. Just being able to overcome those fears as a sophomore has really helped me grow."
According to senior Evan Gamboa, his junior year was pivotal in his development. "My junior year helped me grow," Gamboa said.
Senior Vince Webber emphasized preparation and consistency in his own progress. "Every year I get better, and I work hard and prepare myself to get better," Webber said.
Head coach Matthew Gorney, now entering his 18th year at the helm, praised the leadership and work ethic of his senior class. "This group of seniors has shown a lot of maturity and commitment," Gorney said. "They’ve been through the ups and downs, and they’ve earned this moment."
With returning talent and strong leadership, the Bengals are aiming for a breakout season — one built on resilience, reflection, and a drive to improve.
